Meen kulambu
Ingredients
Fish- 1/2 kg
Tamarind extract- from lemon sized
Green chillies- 2(slit)
Onion- 2(medium sized)
Tomato- 2
Cumin- 1 1/2 tsp
Coconut- 1/2 cup(grated)
Red chilli powder- 1 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder- 2 tsp
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Garlic- 10 pods
Raw mango- 1/2
Curry leaves- few
Coriander leaves- 1/2 cup
Mustard seeds- 1/4 tsp
Urad dhal- 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds- 1/2 tsp
Gingelly oil- 2
Salt- as needed
Method
- Clean the fish pieces thoroughly and apply turmeric powder and a little salt over the pieces and set aside.
- Make a fine paste of onion- 1 1/2, tomato -1, cumin, coconut adding little water.
- Cut the remaining onion into thin slices and tomato and mango into cubes.
- Heat oil in a pan and once it heats up, add mustard seeds.
- Once mustard starts crackling, add in urad dhal, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves, onion and garlic pods and saute well.
- Then add tomato and mango pieces and saute for a minute and add red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and saute for 2 minutes.
- To this, add the paste and mix till the raw flavour goes and now add the tamarind extract and let the gravy comes to a boil. Add water as per the consistency you want.
- Once it starts boiling, drop in the fish pieces into the gravy and allow to cook in medium flame.
- After about 15 minutes, check whether fish is cooked and check for the salt and taste.
- You can adjust the gravy consistency at this stage. Once the kulambu is done, add the coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
